Why Muslin Cloth Is Preferred For Manufacturing Curtains?

Muslin material is widely used for manufacturing canvas tarp and stage curtain. The material is light weights and is made of cotton (plain weave cotton cloth). The threads are woven in a crisscross pattern. According to these thread Counts, the material is divided into bleached and unbleached. Users can separate them according to the color combination. The bleached muslin is white while the unbleached has a beige color.

The fabric is being used by mankind since the 13th century. It is believed to be originated through Bangladesh which was India before 1947. When the east India company went to India, they used the fabric and bought back to Europe. At that time, it was mainly used for stitching dresses. With time, people have developed practical used. For example, many hard fluids like puddings are wrapped in the canvas tarps for retaining shapes. However, they are majorly used for theatre curtains. They are good light diffusers.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Muslin Cloth?

Affordable:

The first and most important benefit is affordability. However, there are multiple versions which can be purchased. The two of them are discussed above. Moreover, to make the fireproof, two types of chemicals are applied. Based on them, muslin inherits fire-resistant Properties.

Easy to Handle:

Another main property is that the muslin is easily handled. Processes of cutting and sewing are easily completed.

Multiple Sizes:

The muslin is available in multiple sizes and colours. Accordingly, buyers can purchase them. For example, any user can purchase from a small piece to big curtains. He just has to stitch corners only.

As Projector Cloth:

The white color of muslin is used as projecting screens. However, it is not efficient in wet conditions.

Shrinkage:

As the material used is cotton, the muslin shrinks. That’s why it is a good idea to purchase a slightly bigger size than the actual need. For example, if any person needs a cloth of 100 centimeters then he should go for 110 Centimeters.

Not Soundproof:

The muslin fabric is not soundproof. That’s why it should not be used for reducing sounds in press conferences. The only reason it is used is that it is easily printed.

Not Fireproof Initially:

The muslin is not fireproof initially. For that users have to add chemicals. In the market, there are two types of chemicals available. The first chemical makes it fire-resistant in all the conditions while the second one helps in only dry ones. That’s why the first material is costly. Also, the fire-resistant property is based upon how many times, the curtains are dry cleaned.

Not light-Proof:

Unlike other material, the muslin is not light proof. It can be used for hiding stuff but cannot stop 100% of the light. For stopping light, there is different material available.
